What is Passivation?

Passivation is a chemical surface finishing process dedicated for stainless steel CNC machined parts. Workpieces are immersed in nitric or citric‑based acid solution to eliminate free iron, machining debris and surface contaminants left from CNC turning, milling operations. This process enriches the chromium‑oxide passive film on stainless‑steel surface, greatly improving anti‑rust and corrosion performance. Passivation does not add any coating layer, will not change part dimension, surface roughness or hardness. It is frequently used as post‑process after tumbling, blasting, brushing or electropolishing. Not applicable for carbon steel, aluminum or brass. Passivation cannot repair existing rust.
