ABS occupies an important middle ground between commodity plastics and higher-performance engineering plastics. Compared with general-purpose plastics such as PP or PE, ABS generally provides better rigidity and dimensional stability. Compared with high-performance materials such as PEEK, PEI, or PAI, ABS is considerably more economical and easier to machine, but offers lower continuous-use temperature capability and lower overall mechanical and chemical performance.
The following values represent typical ranges for common unfilled ABS grades, not guaranteed values for every commercial grade. Actual properties vary with grade, formulation, color, processing history, and test method.

ABS typically has a density close to 1.04 g/cm³, making it significantly lighter than aluminum, steel, brass, and most other engineering metals. This is useful for lightweight enclosures, instrument housings, robotic covers, electronic components, and other applications where reducing component weight is beneficial.
Typical unfilled ABS has a tensile strength in the approximate range of 35–50 MPa and a tensile modulus around 1.8–2.7 GPa. This provides substantially more rigidity than very soft plastics while maintaining useful toughness. For structural applications, engineers should also consider creep and temperature effects.
Impact resistance is one of the defining advantages of ABS. The butadiene component helps ABS absorb impact energy without behaving as a highly brittle material. Actual impact performance varies considerably between grades.
ABS has relatively low thermal conductivity, typically around 0.15–0.25 W/m·K. Its glass transition temperature is commonly around 100–110°C, while practical continuous-use temperatures are generally lower and depend on grade and loading conditions.
Unmodified ABS has moderate wear resistance but is not normally selected as a dedicated wear material. For continuous sliding or severe friction, POM, UHMW-PE, PA, PTFE, or specialized filled engineering plastics may be more appropriate.
ABS generally provides good dimensional stability for an amorphous thermoplastic. CNC-machined ABS can still experience dimensional changes from cutting heat, residual stress, fixture pressure, thermal expansion, and uneven wall thickness.
ABS is a polymeric material rather than a metallic alloy. Its structure consists primarily of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene-derived polymer phases. Commercial formulations may also contain colorants, stabilizers, flame retardants, lubricants, impact modifiers, UV stabilizers, and reinforcing additives.
ABS does not corrode like steel or aluminum, but it can be attacked or degraded by certain chemicals. It generally has reasonable resistance to water, dilute inorganic acids, some dilute alkalis, and many aqueous solutions. Resistance can be poor or limited against acetone and other ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, some esters, certain chlorinated solvents, and strong oxidizing chemicals.
ABS itself does not develop red rust or conventional galvanic corrosion. Nevertheless, prolonged UV exposure, elevated temperature, oxidation, and environmental aging can affect polymer performance. UV-stabilized ABS or another UV-resistant engineering plastic may be preferable for long-term outdoor applications.
ABS can be joined using solvent bonding, adhesive bonding, ultrasonic welding, hot-plate welding, mechanical fastening, and thermal staking. Solvent bonding is common because suitable solvents can partially dissolve the ABS surface and create a strong bonded interface.
ABS is generally considered one of the more machining-friendly engineering plastics. It can be processed using CNC milling, turning, drilling, tapping, reaming, routing, sawing, thread machining, chamfering, and countersinking. The primary challenge is thermal control and workholding.
Sharp carbide tools are commonly preferred. Useful characteristics include sharp cutting edges, positive or neutral geometry as appropriate, adequate flute space for chip evacuation, polished or low-friction cutting surfaces where appropriate, and minimal tool runout.
These are starting ranges for conventional carbide tooling and must be validated for the specific machine, tool, grade, and geometry.
Operation | Representative Range |
Milling cutting speed | Approximately 150–500 m/min |
Milling chip load | Approximately 0.03–0.15 mm/tooth |
Drilling cutting speed | Approximately 50–150 m/min |
Drilling feed | Approximately 0.05–0.25 mm/rev |
Typical causes include excessive spindle speed, insufficient feed, dull tooling, excessive tool engagement, and poor chip evacuation. Use sharp tools, increase feed appropriately, reduce unnecessary rubbing, improve chip evacuation, and control cutting heat.
Burrs can occur at exit edges, drilled holes, and thin sections. Sharp tools, optimized feed and speed, controlled tool deflection, finishing passes, and edge-breaking operations can reduce burrs.
ABS has relatively high thermal expansion compared with metals. Allow parts to stabilize thermally before final inspection and avoid excessive machining heat.
ABS is much softer than metal and can deform under excessive clamping force. Use distributed pressure, soft jaws, vacuum fixtures, support structures, or custom fixtures where appropriate.
Dull tools, vibration, excessive heat, incorrect feed, excessive tool engagement, and material movement can degrade finish. Rigid setups, sharp tooling, optimized finishing passes, and controlled cutting temperature generally provide better results.
Achievable tolerance depends on part dimensions, wall thickness, geometry, machine accuracy, tooling, workholding, temperature, and inspection conditions. For many practical CNC-machined ABS components, ±0.05 mm to ±0.10 mm is a realistic engineering target for selected dimensions under controlled conditions. Tighter tolerances may be achievable on small, stable features with an optimized process.
A practical machined surface may commonly fall around Ra 1.6–3.2 μm, with finer finishes possible through optimized finishing operations and suitable tooling.
ABS is compatible with high-speed CNC machining, but high spindle speed does not automatically improve productivity. Because ABS has low thermal conductivity, excessive spindle speed combined with insufficient feed can generate heat and soften the material.
Use multiple light passes, sufficient support, low clamping pressure, controlled heat, progressive machining of symmetric features, and custom soft jaws or vacuum fixtures when necessary.
ABS is well suited to CNC milling of moderately complex geometries. 4-axis and 5-axis machining can reduce setups and improve access to multi-sided features.
Typical parts include electronic housings, covers, control panels, mounting brackets, battery enclosures, instrument panels, and internal supports.
Applications include sensor brackets, protective covers, cable guides, equipment housings, mounting plates, inspection fixtures, and custom machine guards.
Typical applications include robot sensor housings, cable-management components, protective covers, lightweight brackets, prototype joint covers, end-effector components, and control enclosures.
ABS can be considered for selected non-critical automotive components such as interior brackets, covers, instrument housings, sensor covers, prototype trim components, and electrical enclosures, subject to OEM and environmental requirements.
ABS can be used for selected equipment housings, instrument covers, laboratory fixtures, protective enclosures, and non-implantable mechanical components. Medical applications require verification of sterilization, biocompatibility, chemical exposure, and regulatory requirements.
Applications may include equipment covers, handling fixtures, protective housings, non-critical tooling, custom brackets, and cable-management components. Specialized materials may be required where ESD, contamination, chemical, or high-temperature performance is critical.
ABS is especially useful for functional prototypes such as enclosures, housings, brackets, covers, knobs, mounting components, test fixtures, and functional mechanical assemblies.
Housings: lightweight and impact-resistant. Brackets: suitable for low-to-moderate loads where metal is unnecessary. Covers: good balance of rigidity, impact resistance, and machinability. Fixtures and jigs: easy to machine and economical for low-volume custom tooling. Electrical enclosures: useful for selected indoor and moderate-environment applications.
ABS should not be treated as a single universal material. Material selection can consider standard ABS, high-impact ABS, flame-retardant ABS, UV-resistant ABS, specific commercial grades, color, mechanical requirements, and environmental requirements.
Process development focuses on tool geometry, cutting heat, chip evacuation, fixture pressure, thin-wall stability, dimensional compensation, burr control, surface finish, and inspection temperature.
ABS components can be manufactured using 3-axis CNC milling, 4-axis CNC machining, 5-axis CNC machining, CNC turning, drilling, tapping, reaming, and custom fixture machining. GD&T requirements can be incorporated into process planning and inspection.
Depending on the application and ABS grade, available post-machining treatments may include deburring, edge breaking, polishing, sanding, painting, printing, laser marking, and custom cosmetic finishing.
ABS CNC machining can support rapid functional prototypes, low-volume production, mid-volume production, and recurring batch manufacturing. The appropriate production route should be determined by annual volume, geometry, tolerances, surface finish, tooling investment, and total manufacturing cost.
Depending on project requirements, quality documentation can include dimensional inspection reports, First Article Inspection (FAI), GD&T inspection, Material Test Reports (MTR) when available and applicable, Certificates of Conformance, visual inspection records, surface-finish verification, and batch traceability.
Thin walls are more susceptible to deformation and vibration. Increase wall thickness where the application permits, particularly around deep pockets and large unsupported areas.
CNC milling tools are round, so internal corners naturally contain tool-radius geometry. Design internal radii that correspond reasonably with available cutting tools.
Deep, narrow cavities increase tool deflection and heat accumulation. Where possible, use wider pockets, larger internal radii, and accessible machining directions.
Do not place unnecessarily tight tolerances on every dimension. Apply tighter tolerances only to functional interfaces.
ABS expands considerably more with temperature than most metals. Critical dimensions should be evaluated at a controlled reference temperature.
Provide suitable locating surfaces, datum features, or sacrificial areas where appropriate to improve repeatability.

ABS remains a practical material for custom CNC machining because it combines good impact resistance, moderate stiffness, low density, good dimensional stability, and excellent machinability at a relatively accessible material cost.
Its main CNC machining challenge is thermal management. Sharp tooling, appropriate cutting parameters, stable workholding, controlled chip evacuation, and proper inspection conditions are essential for achieving consistent results.
For housings, covers, brackets, fixtures, electronic components, automation equipment, robotics, functional prototypes, and other moderately loaded plastic parts, ABS can provide an effective balance between performance and manufacturing cost.
For applications involving high continuous temperatures, aggressive chemicals, severe wear, or high structural loads, materials such as POM, PA, PC, PEEK, PEI, PTFE, or metal alloys may be more appropriate depending on the engineering requirements.
